Roofing Dispute Resolution & Independent Inspection Process
A structured, professional approach to resolving roofing concerns fairly and transparently
The Roofing Protection Scheme maintains high standards through comprehensive vetting and approval processes for all member contractors. However, we recognise that concerns can occasionally arise during or after roofing projects. When they do, it is essential that homeowners and contractors have access to a clear, structured process that ensures fairness, transparency, and professionalism.
This page outlines the recommended dispute resolution pathway, including the option for independent roof inspection and expert assessment, designed to protect both parties and facilitate appropriate outcomes.
Step 1: Raise the Concern with Your Contractor
If you have concerns about roofing work carried out by an RPS member, the first step is to raise the issue directly with the contractor in writing. This provides them with an opportunity to:
- Understand your specific concerns
- Inspect the works and assess the situation
- Offer rectification or an appropriate remedy where warranted
Best Practice: Document your concerns clearly, include photographs where relevant, and allow reasonable time for the contractor to respond and investigate.
Step 2: Independent Roof Inspection
If concerns remain unresolved following direct communication with the contractor, an independent roof inspection may be recommended. This provides an impartial, professional assessment of the situation and helps establish facts objectively.
An independent inspection is carried out by a qualified specialist who is not connected to either party. The inspection typically assesses:
- Installation quality – whether works have been carried out to an acceptable standard
- Compliance – whether works comply with manufacturer guidelines and industry standards
- Ventilation and build-up – suitability of ventilation, insulation, and structural considerations
- Material suitability – whether materials used are appropriate for the application
- Evidence of defects – identification of any workmanship or material defects
Independent Roof Survey Providers
Independent inspections can be arranged through specialist roof survey providers who offer impartial technical assessments and expert reports.
One such provider is UK Roof Surveys, which provides independent roof inspection services and expert reports for homeowners, contractors, and insurance purposes across the UK.

Step 3: Written Findings & Recommendations
Following an independent inspection, a structured written report is provided. This report serves as an objective record of the inspector's findings and helps both parties understand:
- Whether the roofing works comply with relevant standards and good practice
- Whether defects, deficiencies, or non-compliance have been identified
- Whether remedial works are required, and if so, the nature and scope
- Recommendations for next appropriate steps
This documentation provides a credible, evidence-based foundation for further discussion between the homeowner and contractor, and can be used to support insurance claims, guarantee claims, or further dispute resolution processes if required.
Structured Resolution
Clear, independent documentation supports fair outcomes and reduces the risk of prolonged disputes. In many cases, an independent inspection report allows both parties to:
- Reach agreement on remedial actions
- Agree on compensation or cost adjustments where appropriate
- Avoid unnecessary escalation or legal proceedings
- Submit a guarantee claim to the Roofing Protection Scheme if applicable
Where works have been carried out by an RPS member and registered under the scheme guarantee, homeowners may be eligible to submit a guarantee claim if defects are identified and the contractor fails to rectify them. The independent inspection report provides essential supporting evidence for such claims.
