1. Introduction
The Roofing Protection Scheme is a consumer protection and accreditation scheme designed to give homeowners peace of mind when instructing roofing contractors. All approved members of the scheme have been independently assessed prior to acceptance and are required to meet ongoing compliance standards.
This document provides an overview of how the Roofing Protection Scheme Guarantee operates, what it covers, and the conditions under which protection may be provided.
2. What Is RPS Protection?
RPS Protection applies only to eligible approved roofing work carried out through the required scheme process. Where the scheme conditions are met, protection may provide financial cover of up to £20,000 over a 10-year period.
RPS protection or guarantee applies only to eligible approved work that has followed the required scheme process and is designed to protect homeowners in qualifying circumstances such as:
- A scheme member ceases trading, or
- A scheme member is unable or unwilling to rectify defects in covered works
RPS Protection is not an insurance policy. It is a protection mechanism administered by the Roofing Protection Scheme, subject to the terms and conditions outlined below. Membership alone does not automatically protect every job — protection is optional and only activates on eligible work after the required independent inspection and sign-off.
3. Who Can Offer a Guaranteed Roof?
Only contractors who have:
- Successfully completed the Roofing Protection Scheme assessment process, and
- Hold an active, paid membership
are permitted to offer works under the Roofing Protection Scheme Guarantee.
Approval is discretionary and based on verification of:
- Identity and business legitimacy
- Valid insurance cover
- Evidence of workmanship
- Risk assessment for guarantee exposure
4. What Does the Guarantee Cover?
Subject to eligibility and approval, the guarantee may cover:
- Defective workmanship
- Failure to complete agreed roofing works
- Issues arising from poor installation practices
Coverage is limited to the scope of works described on the official Roofing Protection Scheme Guarantee Certificate issued for each job.
The maximum claim value under any single guarantee is £20,000.
5. What Is Not Covered?
The guarantee does not cover:
- Wear and tear
- Storm, flood, fire, or accidental damage
- Pre-existing defects
- Design faults outside the contractor's control
- Materials supplied with separate manufacturer warranties
- Consequential losses (e.g. internal decoration, loss of rent)
The scheme does not replace building insurance or manufacturer warranties.
6. How RPS Protection Is Issued
For RPS Protection to be valid:
- The contractor must be an approved member at the time works commence
- The work must be eligible and accepted into the RPS protection process
- The works must be registered with the Roofing Protection Scheme
- The completed work must pass the required independent inspection and sign-off
- UK Roof Surveys is the primary inspection provider
- A Protection Certificate must be issued upon successful inspection
- All required documentation must be submitted
Protection is issued on a per-project basis and is not automatic. Membership alone does not protect every job.
7. Claims Process (Overview)
If an issue arises with guaranteed works:
- The homeowner must first contact the original contractor
- If unresolved, the homeowner may contact the Roofing Protection Scheme
- An independent review of the complaint will be carried out
- Where valid, rectification or financial contribution may be arranged
All claims are assessed on their individual merits.
8. Important Notes for Homeowners
- The Roofing Protection Scheme is not a trade association
- Approval into the scheme does not guarantee future performance
- The guarantee applies only to works specifically registered
- Protection is subject to compliance with scheme rules
Homeowners are encouraged to retain all paperwork, certificates, and invoices relating to the works.
9. Important Notes for Contractors
- Misuse of the scheme or guarantee branding is prohibited
- Failure to comply with scheme rules may result in removal
- Guarantees issued incorrectly may be invalid
- Membership does not imply exclusivity or endorsement beyond the scope of the scheme
10. Summary
The Roofing Protection Scheme Guarantee is designed to raise standards within the roofing industry while offering homeowners an added layer of reassurance. By independently assessing contractors and controlling access to guarantee protection, the scheme aims to reduce risk for all parties involved.
